The Regional Working Group for the North West Indian Ocean was held in Theran, Iran in February 2017 to strengthen tsunami early warning systems for the Makran region.
On 8 September a community drill was organized in Pakistan as part of the IOWave16 regional tsunami exercise, creating momentum for World Tsunami Awareness Day.
On 8 September 2016, the IOWave16 Tsunami Exercise has been carried out in Chabahar in the Islamic Republic of Iran, simulating a 9 Mw earthquake.
In Sri Lanka, as part of IOWave16 tabletop exercises were carried out in 14 districts involving over 750 stakeholders. In total, almost 6,000 people participated in the tsunami exercise, which had an inclusive character.
The multinational IOWave16 tsunami drill in the Indian Ocean has taught Seychelles key lessons about how to save lives in the event that a potentially deadly wave strikes.
