Advancing Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D)

Information and communication technology (ICT) has made fast, wide and deep technological impacts on international development worldwide, driven by rapid growth of mobile, Internet and broadband access in developing countries. The extent of developmental impact has already been recognized- supporting the work of hundreds of millions of farmers and micro-entrepreneurs with access to markets, produce and techniques; creating millions of ICT-based jobs; assisting healthcare workers and teachers; helping climate change adaptations, just to name a few. At the same time, significant inequality still remains in access to the Internet between high-income and low-income countries.

In this background, the book, Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) (link to https://www.routledge.com/Information-and-Communication-Technology-for-Development-ICT4D/Heeks/p/book/9781138101814), was written by Professor Richard Heeks, the chair in Development Informatics at the University of Manchester, UK, who has researched, taught and practised ICT for development for over 30 years. This book is the first dedicated textbook for examining and explaining transformative effects of ICT4D. This book offers the basis for undergraduate, postgraduate and online learning modules on ICT4D.
