Virtual Peering Series – Central Asia #6

The sixth Virtual Peering Series—Central Asia will take place on 24 May at 09.00-10.30 UTC (14.00-15.30) in Western Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan (15.00-16.30 in Eastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan). This event will be organized by the Internet Society, RIPE NCC, and Euro-IX.

Central Asian countries are landlocked, with limited options to connect to the Internet. TeleGeography will focus on the physical cable routes that can provide Internet and other telecommunications to the region. Jim Cowie (Internet Society, DeepMacro, formerly Renesys) will follow with analysis of the interconnection patterns and the main network operators that make up the Internet ecosystem in Central Asia.

The event will wrap up with discussions on the relevance and impact of internationally-supported initiatives. These include:

  • The UNESCAP Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway, which aims to improve regional broadband connectivity by identifying missing cross-border connectivity, reducing regulatory barriers to using cross-borders links, improving bandwidth, and improving the resilience of the infrastructure
  • The World Bank Digital CASA project to improve access to the Internet and increase usage in Kyrgyzstan, with the aim of increasing capacity to deliver digital government services.

The language of the event will be Russian, with simultaneous interpretation in English.
