Tsunami Preparedness
Tsunamis are rare, but they can be extremely deadly. In the past 100 years, more than 260,000 people have perished in 58 separate tsunamis. Considering that tsunamis occur infrequently yet can have tremendous consequences, regular exercises are essential to enhance awareness and preparedness of stakeholder agencies, community organizations and citizens groups to work together to prepare for the evacuation after a tsunami warning is issued by national and local authorities.
More information on tsunami preparedness will be posted shortly. In meantime, please contact the regional adviser on Disaster Risk Reduction of the United Nations ESCAP.
