Tsunami Risk Assessment

Tsunamis are rare, but they can be extremely deadly. In the past 100 years, more than 260,000 people have perished in 58 separate tsunamis. Consequently, effective tsunami risk assessment is critical.

Various risk assessment guidelines have been produced by disaster risk management agencies and international organizations. For instance, the Joint Indonesian-German Working Group on Tsunami Risk Assessment developed Tsunami Risk Assessment Guidelines for Indonesia (Download) while the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) published risk assessment and mitigation guidelines for the Indian Ocean (Download). Also, UNDP published a case study on risk assessment and management for tsunami hazard focused on Sri Lanka (Download).
