Indonesia preparing for IOWave16 Tsunami Drill
Preparations are underway for the mock tsunami drill that will be carried out on September 7th in Indonesia to test standard operating procedures of emergency services. A magnitude 9.2 earthquake south of Sumatra will be simulated that will generate simulated tsunami waves travelling across the Indian Ocean basin.
In Indonesia, the tsunami exercise is a collaborative effort between BMKG, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), with the support of the Government of Japan.
