Tsunami focal points and service providers of the Indian Ocean have met in April as part of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System.

On 8 September a community drill was organized in Pakistan as part of the IOWave16 regional tsunami exercise, creating momentum for World Tsunami Awareness Day.
On 8 September 2016, the IOWave16 Tsunami Exercise has been carried out in Chabahar in the Islamic Republic of Iran, simulating a 9 Mw earthquake.
In Sri Lanka, as part of IOWave16 tabletop exercises were carried out in 14 districts involving over 750 stakeholders. In total, almost 6,000 people participated in the tsunami exercise, which had an inclusive character.
